The signal path is the product

Pick a file. Pick an output. Verity tells you the truth.

This is the same model the player uses, applied to the rules in the manual. Every stage is named. If the bits change, you see where and why. Try the combinations other players keep quiet about.

untouched

Bytes pass through unchanged.

relayed

Bytes are relayed unchanged by a process in the path, such as the stream server.

decoded

Compressed audio is unpacked to PCM. Lossless codecs give back the original samples exactly.

repacked

Bits are repacked into another framing without changing them: DSD over PCM.

resampled

The sample rate or the bit depth changed.

re-encoded

Encoded again, lossless or lossy, for a transport that needs it.

attenuated

The level was reduced in software: DSP volume or levelling.

processed

A DSP stage you switched on touched the samples.

opaque

The device decodes on its own; what it does after that, nobody outside can see.

The nine words the player uses for every stage, straight from its source. A verdict is only "bit-perfect" when nothing but untouched, relayed, decoded and repacked appears between the file and the device.

Your DAC, measured

Verity asks the hardware. It does not guess.

Before the first note, every output is probed and the result is shown on its card: the method, the rates and bit depths it accepts, and where the ceilings are.

  • WASAPI: every rate from 44.1 to 768 kHz at 16, 24 and 32 bits, asked of the driver in exclusive mode without opening the device, so it is safe while music plays.
  • ASIO: each sample rate the driver can run, its native sample type, preferred buffer size, output latency in frames, and whether it offers native DSD.
  • UPnP: the formats the renderer publishes; Sonos gets its documented 24/48 ceiling and no DSD, said up front.
  • DoP ceiling: derived from the PCM limits and labelled "if the DAC decodes DoP", because nothing on the computer can know that.
  • Device setup per output: volume mode (auto, fixed, device, DSP), PCM and DSD ceilings, DSD strategy, resync delay, buffer size, zones, transport.

"How it plays" then runs twelve sample formats through the same decision code as the live path, from CD FLAC to DSD256 and internet radio, and shows what each becomes on that output.

Verity is built for libraries of 300,000 tracks and beyond. The numbers below were measured at 100,000 files on the benchmark in the design notes: 8,000 album folders, 1200 px cover each, local SSD, debug build, 16 workers. Release builds are faster.

01 · Bit-perfect by default

Nothing resamples, dithers or attenuates unless you chose it.

The local engine decodes to left-justified integers and hands the driver 16-bit, 24-in-32 or 24-packed containers by dropping zero bits only. No float, no dither, the file's rate or nothing. A live wall-clock ÷ audio-clock ratio proves it: 1.000 is correct.

02 · Honest states

When a device cannot take a format, the path says so.

A Sonos has a 24/48 ceiling and no DSD. Verity does not pretend; it converts to fit, labels the stage "resampled" and gives the verdict a reason. Fixed volume, offline outputs, unpaired receivers are shown as what they are.

03 · DSD, repacked not converted

DoP keeps the 1-bit stream intact.

DSF and DFF are packed 16 bits per channel per 24-bit frame with alternating markers. DSD64 rides at 176.4 kHz, DSD256 at 705.6 kHz. The bits are never converted, so the path shows a "repacked" stage and a DSD verdict.

04 · Every transport, its truth

AirPlay 2 is 44.1 kHz / 16-bit. Verity says so.

Our own AirPlay 2 sender does transient and HomeKit PIN pairing for HomePod and AirPlay speakers (Apple TV coming), encrypted control, sealed packets, timing sync. Hi-res is resampled and dithered for that transport, and you see it, rather than a green tick that means nothing.

Every room, one system

Zones that behave.

Every output is a zone with its own queue and transport. Choose another output while music plays and the queue, the position and the paused state move with it; a zone already playing its own music is shown, not hijacked. Local outputs play together with drift corrected frame by frame; Sonos groups use Sonos' own sync; grouped zones across brands are coming, AirPlay receivers first because Verity is now the clock master.

  • One entry per device, whatever it speaks: a Sonos shows once with its UPnP, AirPlay and Spotify Connect paths, and "Send audio by" picks the path.
  • Devices you can name, group and hide, with the computer that owns them on the card, and OFFLINE said plainly when it is away.
  • Volume that tells the truth: the device's own control where one exists, DSP volume as a visible stage where not, fixed volume remembered per device when a renderer ignores the slider.

Five dials, every pick explained

Vocals or instrumental, calm or energetic, slow or upbeat, familiar or variety, era strict or open. Scored from what Verity measured in your files: loudness, tempo, brightness, dynamics, plus credits, lyrics and your history. Time of day, the weather outside and the season lean on the choice, and the best master of a recording wins over its duplicates. Every track carries a why line: "by X · rock like the seed · 96 BPM, unhurried · 1961, the seed's era · evening: unwinding".

VOICE

Say it, offline

Push to talk (Ctrl+M). Speech runs on Windows itself with a grammar built from your library, no cloud. "Play Abbey Road on the Gustard", "a calm station", "what is playing", "why this one", "louder", "switch to the kitchen", "sleep in twenty minutes". Vera answers in one voice, on your computer's speakers, never on the hi-fi chain.

A library that keeps up

Local folders, SMB and NFS shares, WebDAV, SFTP, S3 and UPnP servers, watched where they can be. Loudness, true peak, dynamic range, file health, tempo and waveform per track; duplicates by tags and by sound; Chromaprint fingerprints.

OUT

Every output in the house

UPnP AV, OpenHome, Sonos groups, WASAPI exclusive, ASIO, AirPlay 2 with HomeKit pairing (Apple TV coming), Chromecast, Spotify Connect. One entry per device, whatever it speaks.

DSP

DSP you opt into, always shown

Headroom with a clip counter, loudness compensation, tilt, parametric EQ with AutoEq and REW import, convolution, crossfeed, in-family upsampling, crossfade, presets. Never on DoP. Each stage is its own node in the path.

TAG

Fix the tags, keep the old ones

AcoustID and MusicBrainz identification with credits: performers, producers, engineers, works. Preview every difference per track and field, write only what you tick, restore from the backup any time.

NET

You choose the network

Several adapters? Pick the interfaces Verity may use and it uses exactly those for discovery, streaming, the advertised address and callbacks. Virtual switches and VPNs stay off unless you say so. Same choice on the Server.

RIP

Rip CDs properly

To FLAC with read-twice verification and MusicBrainz disc lookup. Then it is just another album in the wall.

REM

A remote on every phone

Web remote on the LAN with a PIN, installable as a web app. Now playing, queue, browse, search, play here.

UPD

Updates you can verify

An ed25519-signed manifest, SHA-256 of the installer, install on request. A build that does not verify is refused and says why.

The library never leaves home

Nothing is sent anywhere without an explicit switch.

Metadata lookups are opt-in and itemised: AcoustID on stored fingerprints, MusicBrainz releases and credits, Wikipedia bios, LRCLIB lyrics, Cover Art Archive. Each behind its own switch, each named. The licence check sends a key, a device fingerprint and a version. Never a track, a play, a source, a network layout.

  • Local first. SQLite on your disk, artwork beside it, backups you can restore from the Technical tab.
  • Works offline. A signed 14-day token renews when the internet is there; when it is not, the music keeps playing.
  • AI playlists with your own key or a local OpenAI-compatible server. Voice control runs offline on Windows speech.

The same Rust core runs in the desktop player today. It will run headless as the Verity Server, and as the Verity Bridge on any other PC, laptop, Raspberry Pi or NAS, turning whatever DAC is attached to that machine into a zone of your system. The same Bridge ships built into our box, a fanless streamer with USB, I2S, coax and optical out, for rooms without a computer. The Relay carries an outbound connection from home so you can listen on the go without opening a port. The iPhone, iPad and Android apps connect to a Verity Server or to the Player on your computer. TIDAL and Qobuz are coming too.
